Southern sea otters are most commonly found along coastal areas of California ranging from Half Moon Bay to Coal Oil Point. Historic records suggest these furry sea mammals have also inhabited coastal marine areas beyond these parameters, with evidence of them splashing around from Northern California to Baja Mexico!
Southern sea otters are considered a keystone species, so they play a critical role in keeping their ecosystem stable and balanced! That's a lot of pressure for an endangered species, huh?
Their preferred habitats are relatively shallow marine areas with muddy or rocky sea bottoms -- bonus points if it's near a kelp forest. Sea otters rarely find their way onto land, and they utilize kelp forests as a prime snacking location. They feast on sea urchins and other kelp-grazers, which in turn helps kelp forest thrive and enrich the ecosystem!
